The 3.2-litre in-line 6-cylinder from the E 320 was transplanted to this model, so the displacement increased to 3,606 cc thanks to the increase in bore and stroke. It is a high-performance version with the aim of establishing itself on the market on the basis of the fame of the previous 190 Evo II, which however was produced in only 502 units. The crankshaft derives from the 3.5-litre diesel engine, while the front and rear axle brakes derive respectively from the contemporary SL 600 and E 420. In addition to new components, Mercedes developed special pistons: the lubrication system was revised, the exhaust and intake ducts and the timing of the distribution were modified. The C-Class, thus prepared, reaches the remarkable power of 280 HP and a torque of 385 Nm. The C36 AMG achieved moderate commercial success: from 1993 to 1997, it totaled 5,221 units sold, ten times the previous 190 Evolution II.
